New Froyo Trend: Yogurt Cubes and Yogurt Slices

The bite-sized yogurt cubes and yogurt slices trend started in mainland China, possibly Shanghai. Fried yogurt slices have been a popular street food in China since 2015 or so. Street food vendors in mainland China started making thicker yogurt slices and cubes around 2017 – 2018. Yogurt cubes and slices are made on freezing pans with yogurt, nuts, fruit, seeds, and grains.

The trend also shows a shift of perceptions from froyo as a dessert to froyo as a healthy snack. For example, freeze-dried yogurt cubes and shelf-stable yogurt drinks have also become a popular snack in China, Korea, and other Asian countries.

It’s been difficult to find information about shops in mainland China that serve thick cut yogurt cubes and yogurt slices. We’ve seen pictures of a few fried yogurt shops in China. One of the shops is called Mr. Xu Yogurt Ice Cream. But their influence has grown and thick cut yogurt cube and slice shops have opened outside of China.

Here are the shops that we found that are serving thick cut yogurt and/ or yogurt slices.
